Port of Los Angeles sees busiest month outside pandemic

In August, the Port of Los Angeles processed 960,597 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), marking a 16% rise compared to the previous year and making it the busiest month on record outside of the pandemic.

As of August 2024, the leading U.S. container gateway is 17% ahead of its pace from 2023, having already handled nearly 1 million more containers than at the same time last year.

“The American consumer continues to spend, which is driving our economy,” stated Gene Seroka, Executive Director of the Port of Los Angeles, during a media briefing. “Some of the cargo arriving now is intended to replenish inventories beyond the holiday season. Along with a consistent influx of manufacturing parts and components, we can expect to see elevated volumes in the near future.”

In August, loaded imports totaled 509,363 TEUs, reflecting an 18% increase from the previous year. Loaded exports were recorded at 121,744 TEUs, down 3% compared to 2023. Additionally, the port managed 329,491 empty containers, a significant 22% increase from the previous year.

In total, the port has moved 6,631,688 TEUs in the first eight months of 2024, which is a 17% increase over the same timeframe in 2023.
