**Port of New York-New Jersey Achieves Record-Breaking July**

The Port of New York-New Jersey experienced its busiest July on record, handling over 800,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) as importers scrambled to stock up on back-to-school and holiday inventory, anticipating various challenges in the global supply chain.

According to a release from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, July marked the seventh-busiest month in the port’s history and was the first time total volume reached 800,000 TEUs since September 2022. The port currently ranks as the second-busiest gateway for loaded cargo in the United States this year, trailing only the combined port complex of Los Angeles and Long Beach in San Pedro, California.

In July 2024, container volume increased by 11% compared to the same month last year and represented a 4% rise over the previous record set in July 2022. Additionally, the volume was 14% higher than June 2024.

North American container ports have experienced a spike in early peak season volumes as shippers aim to sidestep delays caused by shipping disruptions in the Red Sea and potential issues at East and Gulf Coast ports, especially in light of warnings from the International Longshoremen’s Association regarding possible strikes if a new contract isn’t finalized by October 1.

The bi-state agency reported that the port has handled a total of 5,016,672 TEUs in the first seven months of the year, reflecting a 12% increase from the same period in 2023 and a 16% rise compared to the first seven months of 2019, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Overall, total loaded import and export volume reached 3,376,010 TEUs from January to July, solidifying the port’s position as second to LA-Long Beach.
