Lufthansa Cargo Reports Continuous Positive Operating Income After Cargo Downturn
On Tuesday, Lufthansa Cargo announced its expansion into the trans-Pacific market with a new direct freighter service from Vietnam to the United States, reflecting ongoing recovery in its business during the third quarter, boosted by a 16% increase in cargo revenue compared to the previous year.
The cargo division of Lufthansa Group celebrated its inaugural direct all-cargo flight from Asia to North America last Sunday. A Boeing 777 freighter, operated by their joint venture AeroLogic, landed in Los Angeles after departing from Ho Chi Minh City. AeroLogic, co-owned by DHL Express, will conduct a weekly round-the-world route connecting these destinations from its base in Frankfurt, Germany.
Lufthansa Cargo CEO Ashwin Bhat stated that this new freighter route was established in response to the rising demand for Vietnamese products.
In August, Lufthansa, recognized as the 16th-largest cargo airline globally by shipping volume, added another freighter to its fleet, bringing the total to 18 Boeing 777 freighters. This comprises 12 under Lufthansa’s own brand and operating certificate, alongside six chartered from AeroLogic, with the AeroLogic fleet being shared between Lufthansa Cargo and DHL Express. Additionally, Lufthansa Cargo oversees the belly cargo operations for its sister airlines, including Lufthansa Airlines, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, Discover, and SunExpress.
